Wesley Chapel's Pultorak Falls Short in Bid to Unseat Rep. Randy Maggard

WESLEY CHAPEL / PASCO COUNTY, FL — Wesley Chapel's Michael Pultorak spent the summer turning years of public-comment podium time into a long-shot campaign for Tallahassee. On Tuesday, voters decided that bid wasn't quite ready yet.

Incumbent Rep. Randy Maggard defeated Pultorak in the Republican primary for Florida House District 54, taking 68.11% of the vote to Pultorak's 31.89%, according to unofficial results from the Pasco County Supervisor of Elections. Because a write-in candidate is the only name waiting in the general election, Maggard's primary win effectively locks up another term representing east Pasco.

How the Race Played Out

Pultorak, a 26-year captain with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and a longtime Wesley Chapel resident, entered the race after years of showing up at County Commission meetings to press leaders on growth, parks and data centers — earning himself the nickname "The Parks Guy" along the way. He ran on opposition to large data center projects and developer tax incentives, framing his campaign as a pushback against what he called a small, out-of-touch pocket of local influence.

It was always an uphill climb. Maggard, who has represented the district since winning a 2019 special election and has since won three more campaigns, entered the race with a deep financial edge — roughly $152,000 raised, plus $91,000 on hand through his political committee, compared with about $11,000 raised by Pultorak.

Why It Matters for Wesley Chapel

While Pultorak's bid came up short, his campaign put a spotlight on development and data center concerns that Wesley Chapel residents have been raising at county meetings for months. Expect those conversations to continue regardless of who holds the House seat, especially as growth pressure on the district keeps building.
