Florida's Property Tax Plan Could Gut Pasco County's Mosquito Control Program

PASCO COUNTY / WESLEY CHAPEL, FL — Florida's proposed property tax amendment has been generating plenty of conversation about homeowner savings — but there's a side of this story that directly affects every Wesley Chapel resident's quality of life, especially heading into hurricane season. The Pasco County Mosquito Control District is warning that the property tax measure could significantly cut the funding it depends on to keep mosquito populations under control across the county.

"We're certainly planning for the potential worst-case scenario," said the executive director of the Pasco County Mosquito Control District. For a county that sits in one of Florida's most mosquito-heavy regions — with hundreds of retention ponds, wetlands, and waterways running through communities like Wesley Chapel, Epperson, and Two Rivers — that's not a statement to take lightly.

Why Mosquito Control Matters More Than People Realize

Mosquito control in Florida isn't just about comfort. The Pasco County Mosquito Control District monitors and treats for mosquito-borne diseases including West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis, and — increasingly — dengue fever. The program runs aerial spray operations, ground-level larvicide treatments, and ongoing disease surveillance across the entire county.

Without adequate funding, treatment frequency drops, surveillance shrinks, and the disease risk to residents rises — particularly for the thousands of families living near the retention ponds and conservation areas that define Wesley Chapel's master-planned communities.

The Bigger Picture

This is just one example of the tradeoff embedded in the November ballot measure. For individual homeowners, the savings on paper are real. But the services funded by property taxes — mosquito control, fire stations, parks, road maintenance, and more — are equally real. Wesley Chapel residents will need to weigh both sides carefully before casting their vote.
