Tropical Depression Two Forms Off Florida's West Coast — What It Means for Wesley Chapel This Week

TAMPA, FL — Tropical Depression Two formed off Florida's west coast Sunday morning and is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Bertha within the next day or two as it continues to organize.

Where It's Headed 

A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for much of the Florida Panhandle coastline, stretching from the Ochlockonee River west to the Alabama border, where tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 36 to 48 hours. Additional watches or warnings could be issued farther west over the next couple of days.

What It Means Locally 

For Tampa Bay and Wesley Chapel, forecasters say very little has changed — the system is expected to continue moving away from the local coastline, so no significant local impacts are expected. The main thing residents should watch for is periods of showers and thunderstorms, with rain chances staying elevated into early next week before gradually decreasing as the system moves farther away. Additional Hurricane Hunter reconnaissance flights were scheduled to fly into the storm to get a clearer read on its structure.

Where It Goes From Here 

Beyond the 48-hour mark, the forecast gets less certain. If the storm's center stays close to the northern Gulf Coast, land interaction and drier air could limit how much it strengthens, favoring a weaker system tracking toward eastern Louisiana. But if it stays farther offshore over the Gulf's very warm waters, it will have a better chance to organize and strengthen — potentially reaching hurricane strength. How close the center tracks to the coastline over the next couple of days will play a major role in determining both.
