Pasco County is moving ahead with plans for a new medical magnet high school in Wesley Chapel — a roughly $80 million campus designed to open by August 2028, train students for healthcare careers, and pull hundreds of students out of two of the district's most overcrowded high schools.

For families in Wesley Chapel who have been watching Wiregrass Ranch High School operate at over 140% capacity, this announcement carries real urgency — and real promise.

What's Being Built

The roughly $80 million, nearly 75-acre campus would sit on district-owned land off Meadow Pointe Boulevard, between Wesley Chapel Boulevard (CR-54) and State Road 56, near the Country Walk community. The site puts the school directly between Wiregrass Ranch High and Wesley Chapel High — the two campuses it's designed to relieve.

Opening-day capacity is set at about 1,300 students, with coursework focused on three primary programs: medical lab sciences, medical imaging, and nursing. These aren't elective tracks — they're career-pathway programs built around the reality that Wesley Chapel is now home to four hospital systems and one of the fastest-growing healthcare employment markets in Florida.

How Students Get In

Because the location lies between two existing high schools, the district is not using traditional rezoning. Instead, students from across the district will apply through the Pasco Pathways lottery system — meaning any Wesley Chapel student can apply regardless of which attendance zone they live in.

Why It's Being Funded the Way It Is 

Construction is funded primarily through impact fees paid by new residential development — the fees that developers pay to Pasco County when they build new homes. In effect, the new communities being built across Wesley Chapel are directly funding the school that their future residents' children will attend. An official name for the school has not been announced — "medical magnet high school" is the working description used in district materials. Wiregrass Ranch High surpassed 140% capacity this fall, with Wesley Chapel High not far behind.
