"Operation Southern Slow Down" Speed Crackdown Underway Across Florida This Week

FLORIDA — Drivers across Florida should expect a heavier law enforcement presence on highways this week as part of "Operation Southern Slow Down," an annual multi-state speed enforcement campaign running July 13 through July 18, 2026.

What's Happening 

The Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Department of Transportation, and local law enforcement agencies are increasing patrols on interstates and state highways statewide, with a focus on speeding and aggressive driving. This is the ninth year of the campaign, conducted in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and four other Southeastern states: Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Why Now 

Officials point to the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day as the "100 deadliest days of summer," when fatal crashes involving teen drivers rise sharply. According to the 2024 Florida Traffic Crash Facts report, speeding was a factor in about 6% of Florida traffic fatalities.

What Officials Are Saying 

"The moments you'll save by speeding don't make up for the lives you put in danger," said one Florida police chief. "And it won't account for any time if you don't make it there safely." FHP officials emphasized that speed, distracted driving, and lack of seatbelt use remain among the top contributing factors in fatal crashes.

The campaign is part of Florida's broader Target Zero initiative, aimed at reducing traffic deaths and serious injuries statewide. Drivers traveling through Wesley Chapel and Pasco County on I-75, SR-56, or SR-54 this week should expect a more visible law enforcement presence and plan accordingly.
