WESLEY CHAPEL, FL — After years of waiting, construction is well underway on the Mary W. Sierra Family YMCA, and the finish line is in sight. The facility is on track to open this summer, giving Wesley Chapel residents something they've been asking for since long before the subdivisions started multiplying.
What's Being Built
The $35 million, 50,000-square-foot complex is located at 4379 Wellbeing Way — right at the southwest corner of Bruce B. Downs Blvd. and Eagleston Blvd., next to BayCare Hospital Wesley Chapel. It's designed as a full community hub, not just a gym.
• Three-pool aquatic center: lap pool, teaching pool, and family adventure pool
• Indoor gym, group fitness studios, and spa-style locker rooms
• Youth programs: after-school care, sports leagues, and summer camps
• Senior wellness, cancer survivor programs, and chronic disease prevention
• Expected to create more than 300 local jobs
Why It Took This Long
Originally announced in 2020 with a planned 2023 opening and a $15 million price tag, the project was derailed by COVID-19 and rising construction costs. It came back larger and better — more than double the original footprint and more than double the budget. A major donation from the Sierra family, longtime supporters of the Bob Sierra YMCA in Carrollwood, made it happen. The new facility bears the name of Mary W. Sierra in their honor.
What It Means for the Community
Over 27,000 youth and nearly 20,000 seniors live within minutes of the site. For a community that's been adding rooftops at a breakneck pace, this is the kind of anchor that turns a suburb into an actual community. As Pasco County Commissioner Seth Weightman put it at the groundbreaking: this is more than just a building.
